Hurricane Season is Here: How to Prep Your Pool

Hurricane season is a fact of life in Florida. While you're stocking up on water and batteries, don't forget about your pool. Proper preparation can prevent thousands of dollars in damage to your pool shell and equipment.
Don't Drain Your Pool!
This is the most common mistake. The weight of the water holds the pool in the ground. If you drain it, the rising groundwater table during a storm can cause the pool shell to "float" or pop out of the ground, destroying it. Keep water levels normal, or lower them slightly (no more than 1-2 feet) if heavy rain is forecast.
Secure Loose Items
Patio furniture, pool toys, and skimmer lids can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Store them inside a garage or shed. Do not throw patio furniture into the pool—it can damage the finish.
Turn Off Power
Turn off the circuit breakers to your pool equipment before the storm hits. This protects the pump motors and electronics from power surges and lightning strikes. After the storm, check for damage before turning the power back on.
