New Pool Start-Up & Surface Care: Protecting Your Investment

The first 30 days of a new pool's life are the most critical. Whether you have a quartz, pebble, or standard plaster finish, the way you treat the water during this "curing" phase will determine the look and longevity of your surface for years to come.
The "Plaster Dust" Phase
New plaster, pebble, and quartz finishes cure underwater for the first 28 days. During this time, calcium hydroxide bleeds out, causing pH to spike rapidly (often > 8.0). This is normal, but it must be managed aggressively.
- Daily Brushing: Essential to remove dust and prevent rough scaling.
- Acid Demand: New pools consume significantly more acid to fight the pH bounce.
Why LSI is Non-Negotiable
The Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) measures water's ability to dissolve or deposit calcium. It's the gold standard for pool chemistry, especially for new surfaces.
Low LSI (Aggressive)
Water becomes "hungry" and eats calcium from your new surface, causing permanent etching and pitting.
High LSI (Scale Forming)
Water deposits excess calcium, creating rough sandpaper scale on your smooth finish.
Impact of Special Features
Modern pools often have features that make pH control even harder. Here is what you need to know:
Salt Systems (SWG)
Salt cells generate chlorine and sodium hydroxide, which has a very high pH. This creates a localized high-LSI environment inside the cell, leading to calcium flakes if not managed with LSI-balanced water.
Heaters
Hot water tends to scale more easily (calcium is less soluble in heat). For new pools with heaters, maintaining a slightly lower pH/alkalinity balance is crucial to prevent heat exchanger failure.
Water Features (Spillovers/Fountains)
Aeration raises pH naturally by off-gassing CO2. If you run waterfalls or spillovers frequently, your pool will require more frequent acid additions to prevent the pH from drifting too high and causing scale.
